Jud Brewer, MD, PhD is a psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and New York Times bestselling author who specializes in the science of habit change and mindfulness. He is Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University’s Mindfulness Center and serves as associate professor in the School of Public Health and School of Medicine at Brown.
Dr. Brewer has developed evidence-based programs for anxiety, addiction, and habit change, including his “Going Beyond Anxiety” program. His research uses fMRI and neurofeedback to study the brain’s Default Mode Network and how mindfulness affects self-referential thinking.
He is the author of The Craving Mind (Yale University Press, 2017), the New York Times bestseller Unwinding Anxiety (2021), and The Hunger Habit (2024). His TED talk “A simple way to break a bad habit” has over 20 million views. His work has been featured on 60 Minutes, TED, The New York Times, and NPR, among others.
Dr. Brewer earned his MD and PhD from Washington University in St. Louis and completed his residency in psychiatry at Yale. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife Mahri and their cats.
