Coaching for Venture Capitalists

You spend your days assessing other people’s leadership. Almost no one assesses yours. The venture role is unusual in this way.

Know you're not alone. Join the conversation.

GET STARTED

You sit on boards, coach founders through their hardest quarters, and make judgment calls about who can lead and who can’t; all while operating inside a partnership where feedback is scarce, the scoreboard takes ten years to settle, and the thing you’re actually being measured on is your judgment itself. Meanwhile, you’re the person a founder calls at 11pm, and you’re never quite sure whether you’re supposed to be their board member, their advisor, their therapist, or their boss.

Since 2014, Reboot has worked with thousands of leaders across the globe, including investors and venture partners at firms of every size and stage.

WHY INVESTORS CHOOSE REBOOT

Jake Chapman

“… the magic comes not from any particular exercises or tools, it comes from the people involved. The Reboot team possesses an otherworldly talent for coaxing authenticity and truth out of people. They can even coax truths out of people who, like myself, have been lying to themselves for years.”

Jake Chapman Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Gelt Venture Capital

The board-leadership relationship doesn’t have to be a challenge.

THE CHALLENGES SPECIFIC TO THE SEAT

  • Role confusion is the default state. Board member, coach, advocate, and eventual decision-maker about someone’s job are four different relationships, and founders experience them as one person. Knowing which one you’re in — and saying so — is a learnable skill that most investors are never taught.
  • You are absorbing a great deal. Ten founders’ worst quarters arrive in your inbox simultaneously. The emotional load of the portfolio is real, rarely acknowledged, and has nowhere obvious to go.
  • Partnership dynamics are their own thing. Disagreements about deals are almost never only about deals. Seniority, economics, attribution, and long-held resentments run underneath partnership conversations in ways that resemble co-founder dynamics more than most firms admit.
  • The feedback loop is broken by design. You won’t know whether your judgment was good for the better part of a decade. In the meantime, you have to keep making calls with conviction, which is a strange psychological demand.
  • New partners are expected to arrive fully formed. The transition from operator or associate into a partner seat comes with enormous latitude and very little instruction.

OUR DISTINCTIVE APPROACH

Reboot’s approach to coaching was shaped by a conviction that the quality of your leadership is inseparable from the quality of your self-understanding.

For investors, this has a particular edge. The pattern-matching that makes you good at this job is built out of your own history: what you find impressive, what you find suspicious, whose confidence reads as competence to you and whose doesn’t. Those instincts are an asset. They are also unexamined, and they shape where your capital goes and which founders get your patience.

Coaching is where you get to look at that directly.

COACHING VS. ADVISING

You are surrounded by advice. Your partners have opinions, your LPs have expectations, and the ecosystem produces an endless stream of commentary about how to do this job well.

Coaching isn’t more of that. It’s a structured, confidential space to figure out how you want to operate — how you want to show up for founders, what kind of partner you want to be inside your firm, and what you’re willing to be known for. Reboot’s leadership coaching helps you make the unconscious conscious, so the instincts driving your decisions become things you can examine rather than things that simply happen.

Practical Skills + Radical Self-inquiry

The practical half of this work: how to give a founder hard feedback without destabilizing them, how to be useful in a board meeting rather than merely present, how to disagree with a partner in a way that strengthens the partnership, how to say no to a founder you like.

The deeper half: understanding what you’re actually doing when you rescue a struggling founder, why certain founders activate something in you, what you’re avoiding when you go quiet in partnership meetings, and how your own relationship to money, status, and being right affects your judgment.

Our Formula

Practical Skills + Radical Self-Inquiry + Shared Experiences
=

Enhanced Leadership + Greater Resilience

PORTFOLIO CIRCLES AND FIRM-LEVEL WORK

Many firms come to us not for themselves but for their founders, and then discover the work is just as valuable one level up.

Portfolio Circles bring your portfolio CEOs together into facilitated peer groups, giving founders a place to be honest about what’s hard with people in exactly the same seat. It’s some of the highest-leverage support a firm can offer, and it doesn’t route the founder’s hardest conversations through the person who sits on their board.

We also work directly with partners through leadership team development and 360° Reviews.

HOW WE SUPPORT INVESTORS

Beyond Traditional Business Coaching

Working with a Reboot coach, you’ll develop the capacity to:

  • Know which role you’re playing with a founder, and name it out loud
  • Support founders without taking over, and challenge them without diminishing them
  • Navigate partnership conflict as a relationship rather than a negotiation
  • Carry the emotional weight of a portfolio without absorbing it
  • Understand the patterns underneath your own judgment

The Inner Work of Leadership

We believe that work does not have to destroy us. Work can be the way in which we achieve our fullest selves.

Reboot’s coaches help you examine the beliefs and patterns that shape how you operate, understand why certain situations keep producing the same frustrations, and develop a more intentional way of showing up — grounded in your own values rather than in the norms of an industry that doesn’t often stop to examine them.

WORKING WITH A REBOOT COACH

Our 1:1 coaching contracts are month-to-month, with rates varying based on session length and frequency. A typical engagement includes two 60- or 80-minute sessions per month, with access to your coach between sessions.

WHY REBOOT?

Reboot was founded on the belief that in our work lies the possibility of the full realization of human potential. Work doesn’t have to destroy us. Work can be the way we achieve our fullest selves, and in doing so, we become more effective leaders, colleagues, and human beings.

We believe that helping clients develop managerial skills is important, but not enough to create the transformation they’re seeking. To be a leader, you must also cultivate a fearless willingness to look deeply through self-inquiry.
